Norfolk Southern Settlement

By: Ronald R. Parry

On April 9, 2024, it was announced that Norfolk Southern would pay 600 million dollars to residents in and around East Palestine, Ohio for the damages sustained as a result of the train derailment in that city that occurred on February 3, 2023. There will be a formula for the distribution of the funds to pay residents for property damage, personal injury, and medical monitoring.

The settlement is contingent only at this time and is subject to court approval by the United States District Court in Youngstown, Ohio, Federal Judge, Benita Y. Pearson.

Individual payments to residents of the East Palestine area, including neighboring communities in Pennsylvania, will be determined based upon various factors including distance from the derailment site. Claim forms will be provided to area residents. Additional details of the settlement will be disclosed in the near future.

Strauss Troy represents approximately 750 individuals who live in and around East Palestine. We will have a substantial presence in the area in the near future to assist claimants in determining their rights and completing their claim forms if they elect to go through the claims process.
