Women’s History Month Q&A – Joy L. Hall

During the month of March, Strauss Troy is celebrating Women’s History Month by highlighting several of its female attorneys. We sat down with them to get their thoughts on important topics such as the importance of Women’s History Month, breaking down barriers faced by women in the industry, advice they’d give to other women in the field, and who inspires them.

Today we are highlighting Joy L. Hall. Joy is a Shareholder at Strauss Troy focusing her practice on Federal & State Tax Law and White Collar Crime in the Northern Kentucky office.

Q: What does Women’s History Month mean to you?

A: Women’s History month means more to me than just celebrating one month out of the year. Every day of every month, females around the world should be celebrated, acknowledged and respected. So many times, females feel inferior to men, or even other women. We need to love ourselves, find peace within ourselves and LEARN from our past to raise each other up. Women’s History Month to me is listening, learning and loving all women no matter how different we are from one another.

Q: What advice would you give to women in your field?

A: My advice for women in my field is to keep advancing. Always continue to learn either from others or through education. When you think that you finally know all there is in the field of practice, you are in essence shorting yourself. There will always be a new law, regulation, or case that will bring another depth to the field of practice. Never stop moving forward.

Q: How are you breaking barriers faced by women in your field?

A: I am in a field of practice that very few women participate. I think that I am breaking down the “roles” that typically men have filled and as time moves forward, I am noticing more and more women seeking more technical and challenging roles in the tax and business areas. I break down barriers by working hard, acknowledging differences and participating in areas not normally taken on by females. As I enter my twentieth year of practicing law, I want to help other females break down the barriers allowing others to enter into fields of practice that are challenging.

Q: Who is a woman that inspires you, and why?

A: My mother has always inspired me and pushed me to be my best. My mother inspires me for being the breadwinner of our family and making sure that I advocate for myself and those that cannot advocate for themselves. My mother is a high school graduate and has worked in a factory most of her life. She developed two (2) major immune deficiency diseases in the past 15 years but still works 50 hours a week. My mother is strong willed, loving and kind. She loves others when they should not be loved and forgives just as graciously. I will forever be inspired by my mom.
