Women’s History Month Q&A – Julie K. Hopkins

Strauss Troy Attorney Julie Hopkins

During the month of March, Strauss Troy is celebrating Women’s History Month by highlighting several of its female attorneys. We sat down with them to get their thoughts on important topics such as the importance of Women’s History Month, breaking down barriers faced by women in the industry, advice they’d give to other women in the field, and who inspires them.

Today we are highlighting Julie K. Hopkins. Julie is a Shareholder at Strauss Troy focusing her practice on labor and employment in the Northern Kentucky office.

Q: What does Women’s History Month mean to you?

A: Women’s History Month is a chance to recognize and celebrate the many ways women have made our society and the world a better and more equitable place.

Q: What advice would you give to women in your field?

A: Believe in yourself and your worth. Don’t ever accept the idea that you have something more to prove because you are a woman. Women have shown that they have the ability to excel at all levels of law.  We are managing partners, general counsel, and Supreme Court justices – and we now make up the majority of law school students in the U.S. Start each day with a belief in your worth and in your ability to succeed.

Q: How are you breaking barriers faced by women in your field?

A: The three “P”s – Preparation, Persistence, and Picking my battles.

Q: Who is a woman that inspires you, and why?

A: Ruth Bader Ginsburg once said, “Fight for the things that you care about, but do it in a way that will lead others to join you.” I think that is excellent advice for law and life. It’s not just being right that makes you an effective advocate for yourself or others. Ruth Bader Ginsberg was universally admired and respected by the legal community, including by those who sometimes disagreed with her, because she always combined her amazing intellect with integrity, professionalism, and respect for others.
